The Salvation Army of Hampden Celebrated Seder with Feast...
Seder is a Jewish ritual meal that commemorates the story of Exodus, when the Israelites were freed from slavery in Egypt. On April 5, 2023, our Hampden Corps held an interfaith Seder Dinner open to the community to educate corps members and Hampden residents on this deeply meaningful and sacred ritual within Judaism.
Captains Matthew and Laura Tidman of Hampden Corps led the service. A traditional Seder is typically a meal that involves many symbolic foods, readings from the Haggadah (the text that tells the story of the Exodus) and prayers. Hampden corps prepared a delicious feast of matzah (unleavened bread), bitter herbs, a roasted shank of lamb (symbolizing the paschal sacrifice), and various herbs. Hampden Corps explained the Haggadah, which outlines seder with text and songs.
Why is Seder important?
Seder serves as a way to remember and retell the story of Exodus. It’s an important feast where loved ones can come together to pass down traditions and reflect on themes of freedom, redemption, and faith. Seder is also a great time to dive deeper into biblical scripture and achieve greater personal and spiritual growth.
There’s much Biblical scripture tied to Seder, such as the story of Exodus.
For example, Exodus 13:8 says, “And you shall tell your son on that day, It is because of what the Lord did for me when I came out of Egypt.” Passages from Exodus, such as this, are read during Seder to emphasize the importance of passing down stories of freedom, growth, and redemption for generations.
Hampden Corps members enjoyed participating in this year’s seder and they look forward to this and future community events.
