THE BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB ENJOY A NIGHT OUT AT CAMDEN YARDS
On September 22, 2022- The Salvation Army of Central Maryland was honored by The Orioles as part of their “Heroes Corner” program for distributing over 10,000 meals to low-income seniors during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
On that day, The Salvation Army filled the seating rows with children from The Boys and Girls clubs of Middle River, Glen Burnie, and of Franklin Square. Many children wore orange Orioles t-shirts, ate hot dogs, pizza, Cracker Jacks, and jumped up and down when prompted by the stadium—for the first time in Camden Yards.
“What most people don’t realize is that many of our kids from The Boys and Girls club come from disadvantaged neighborhoods, where some kids have never been outside their street block let alone their town. The Boys and Girls club aspires to not only shape leaders for tomorrow but to also give many children a childhood,” said Area Director of The Boys and Girls Club William Boone.
Sherri Bullard, Boys and Girls club branch manager for Glen Burnie was overjoyed that some of her kids were able to go to their first game. “To an adult, it may just seem like a baseball game but to a child it means more than you know. We greatly appreciate the Orioles for collaborating with The Salvation Army to give these kids a treasured memory that they can also pass down to their kids.”
Outings such as Orioles games, trampoline parks and even after school care, leadership development, and computer training is provided to all Boys and Girls club members in Central Maryland.
The Salvation Army operates three Boys & Girls Clubs throughout central Maryland which provide children and youth with educational, spiritual, and recreational programs.
Clubs offers children and youth an opportunity to interact with their peers in a structured and supervised environment.
Each of the three Salvation Army Boys & Girls Clubs in Central Maryland, Franklin Square, Middle River and Glen Burnie, work collectively with families, schools, and outside agencies to provide at-risk youth, ages 6 to 18, with fun educational, recreational, cultural, and technological experiences, helping them to build new friendships, learn new skills, and explore their own talents and strengths. Programs provided also promote teamwork, healthy lifestyle choices, and community involvement.
