Preparing for Hurricane Season: Ensuring Safety and Readiness

Jun 19, 2024

As we enter hurricane season, everyone needs to be prepared. Whether you live along the coast or inland, the impacts of summer storms can be significant. Recently, our teams in West Virginia have been actively responding to tornadoes, showcasing the importance of readiness.

The National Weather Service predicts an above-average hurricane season this year. With the recent end of a prolonged and record-breaking El Niño, our oceans are warmer than usual, which can intensify storms. The Gulf of Mexico is also experiencing 'warm eddies,' further fueling potential storms. Even if we don't get a direct hit from a hurricane, we should be prepared for possible flooding, wind damage, and possibly tornadoes.

Now is the time to ensure your safety and prepare your community to respond effectively. Here are some tips to help you get ready:

  1. **Create an Emergency Kit**: Include essentials like water, non-perishable food, medications, flashlights, batteries, and important documents.
  2. **Stay Informed**: Keep up-to-date with the latest weather forecasts and alerts from trusted sources.
  3. **Have a Plan**: Know your evacuation routes, have a communication plan with your family, and ensure you know where local shelters are located.
  4. **Secure Your Property**: Take steps to protect your home, such as trimming trees, securing outdoor items, and reinforcing windows and doors.
  5. **Help Your Neighbors**: Check in on elderly or vulnerable neighbors to ensure they are also prepared.

Our thoughts and prayers are with those who may face severe weather in the coming months. Stay safe and ready!
