HOW ANGEL TREE TEACHES YOUNG DONORS GRATITUDE DURING CHRISTMAS TIME
During Christmas time, The Salvation Army receives Angel Tree donations from individual donors, corporations, churches, and even non-profits. Often, our donors are over the age of 18. That’s not the case this year thanks to students from Piney Ridge Elementary School.
Piney Ridge Elementary School students, ages 4 through 11, participated with The Salvation Army of Carroll County’s Angel Tree Christmas program this year as donors. Each child adopted an angel (ages 0 to 12), and personally shopped for toys, clothes, coats, and books.
“I think it is important for kids to not always think about themselves and to think of others,” said Christina Snively, a school counselor at Piney Ridge Elementary School. “Kids ages 4-11 are very egocentric. Because service learning is a requirement for their future graduation, it is a great way for kids to start thinking about others.”
Snively is in charge with several projects for the school, including Angel Tree. It’s been several years since the school handled a community-wide project due to COVID, but the Angel Tree donation experience was positive with many children. Communicating that there is a deep need in Carroll County and explaining that the toys the children are giving are not for them was a learning experience. “We hope for the students to participate as Angel Tree donors for years to come.”
Angel tree was selected as a school-wide project because The Salvation Army of Carroll County is a “great organization” that deserves the support of the communities they serve added Snively.
