WOMEN’S AUXILIARY CHRISTMAS LUNCHEON 2021
The Salvation Army of Central Maryland’s Women’s Auxiliary promotes and nurtures friendships in a Christian atmosphere through volunteerism, fund-raising and community service. This year, The Salvation Army of Central Maryland’s Women’s Auxiliary had their annual Christmas luncheon at the Middle River Boys and Girls Club on November 16, 2021. A strong fellowship of women, with a rich tapestry of history with The Army convened in hopes to raise money for Catherine’s Cottage, Food Insecurity Issues, and to help those combating homelessness. The Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary is a local expression of a word-wide movement that seeks spiritual redemption and social rehabilitation of those it serves.
Attendees at the event wore colorful sweaters, smiles, and open hearts at this fundraiser. Rouge Catering was a special sponsor and prepared a delectable grilled chicken, veggie, and rice platter for guests. Dessert was a special treat for sugar lovers. Rouge’s cheesecake paired with their raspberry compote was so popular that second, even third helpings, was quite common.
The Women’s Auxiliary, led by President Betsie Johnson, were managing silent auctions, bake sales, antique doll and gift basket drawings throughout the event in hopes of raising thousands to go to victims of human trafficking (Catherine’s Cottage). In addition, this Christmas Luncheon wouldn’t have been possible if it weren’t for this year’s Christmas Committees featuring Mildred Zeller, Gail Cairns, Jean Smith, Francene Siegel, Deanna Moskos, Betsie Johnson, Ann Francis, and Luanne Bryant-France
A vibrant brass band featuring our Middle River Captains Jumain and Katie Bernabe, played classic Christmas tunes throughout the luncheon. The Salvation Army is internationally famous for their brass band. Did you know that all our officers play a brass instrument?
Our Commander of The Salvation Army of Central Maryland, Major DeeAnn Glick, manages this special ministry and shared some personal anecdotes and stories on how The Salvation Army saves many lives, even back in 1940. “I am proud of what The Salvation Army has done for people. Back in 1940, that knock on the door by an officer saved my Mom’s life. She was raised by a gangster who was a mechanic for Pretty Boy Floyd (Charles “Pretty Boy” Floyd was known for his violent bank robberies and continuous run-ins with the police in the late 1920s),” said Major Glick.
“Let’s flash forward to 2021, and I have a young lady at a shelter who I give ministry too, and you know why. Because somebody knocked on a door and I am here today. Because someone knocked on a door, Major Roger Glick is here today. We cannot do what we do without your support. Because of that I want to thank you for supporting us and thank you for trusting us.”
Many of our Women’s Auxiliary members have a deep history with The Salvation Army. Many of our members have been with us for over 50-60 years.
Our members share their time, talents, and treasure by paying dues, making donations of cash and goods, volunteering with programs, and working on and attending fundraising events. They function as a fundraising group with a sincere desire to help those less fortunate. The ladies of the auxiliary have a good time, work hard, and live by the mission of “Doing the Most Good.”
