Maryland Volunteers Assist Salvation Army with Disaster Response to Hurricane Helene
Central Georgia - In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, two dedicated volunteers from Maryland, Larry Pope and Pinny Margolius, have been mobilized to assist with The Salvation Army’s disaster relief efforts in Central Georgia. Both Pope and Margolius, seasoned volunteers with The Salvation Army of Central Maryland, bring a wealth of experience in disaster response, stepping up to support communities severely impacted by the storm.
Their deployment spans across Candler, Emanuel, Montgomery, Toombs, and Wheeler Counties—regions still grappling with the effects of the hurricane. Thousands of residents in these areas are enduring harsh conditions, with limited access to electricity, clean water, and food. According to Melvin Welch, the Salvation Army’s Lead Canteen Worker in the region, the need for essential resources is dire, and the commitment of volunteers like Pope and Margolius is crucial to sustaining relief efforts.
For the next two weeks, these volunteers from Maryland will assist in distributing up to 6,000 meals per day to residents in need. The Salvation Army has activated canteens and emergency response teams, working tirelessly to provide meals, hydration, and critical supplies. Pope and Margolius play a pivotal role in ensuring these supplies reach those most affected, drawing on their extensive volunteer background to coordinate efficient distribution.
“We’re here to help these residents get through one of the toughest times in their lives,” said Welch. “The dedication of volunteers like Larry and Pinny makes all the difference.”
As the recovery efforts progress, The Salvation Army and its volunteers remain steadfast in their mission to deliver hope, relief, and support to the communities devastated by Hurricane Helene.
